The official opening of the Panda House is scheduled for Monday December 14. Adelaide Zoo’s Giant Panda House is extensive and has many interesting features including:

1. Separate outdoor exhibits for each Giant Panda, each with significant rock terracing, caves, chilled rocks, misting systems and shady gulleys.
2. Six air-conditioned indoor dens to provide flexibility in managing the Giant Pandas. Two of the dens are also part of the exhibit.
3. Noise reducing design features to minimise disturbance during the breeding season. The female’s off limit house has been designed to minimise noise in and around the cubbing den. Acoustic consultants have designed walls and ceiling to ensure that Funi’s living quarters are quiet.
4. Thousands of trees and shrubs have been planted in the precinct, some up to 15 metres high for the Giant Pandas to climb into and to provide them with shade.
5. The five hectare bamboo plantation which has eight species of bamboo under cultivation. The plantation has an unlimited supply of water for irrigation thanks to sponsorship from SA Water and the bamboo is growing extremely well as a result. Thanks to a generous supply of bamboo plants given to us from the local Adelaide community, the plantation will continue to be expanded over the next two years. Bamboo will be delivered daily and after washing it will be stored in a purpose built cool room located in the panda house kitchen. Weigh scales located in the kitchen will allow us to weigh all the bamboo before it is offered to the pandas and all waste material can be weighed and recorded.
