Hi all, 

Another quick update about how it’s all going in chimp world. 

If you come up and visit, stand on the viewing platform and just watch what the chimps are up to - it’s a pretty relaxed and interesting life for these guys now the girls have come to stay.

On the nice sunny days you will see the girls outside in their habitat soaking up the rays (trying to get rid of the last of their European moon tans!) exploring all the nooks and crannies, jumping in and out of the shrubs, climbing the trees (chasing rabbits if they are quick!) and playing with the boys. It really is so nice to see 8 chimps out in the ‘wildness’ of their new home.

Here are a few recent photos of the new chimp group in case you havn’t been able to see them in person. The girls are very settled already and the smallest one, Zwala, even told off Boyd (the alpha male) yesterday with such fierceness he screamed and ran away!

Come and visit us at Monarto Zoo! This week the chimps have been learning to use new parts of their house, mainly the raceways - these connect their night quarters to where their new outside yards will be, the big play room where you can see them now and other areas of their house.

It can be a scary thing going inside a space they are not familiar with so we need a lot of patience and bananas! They will do almost anything for a banana...

Good to see you back checking out what is new and exciting in the chimp universe here at Monarto.

Ok, well a few things to tell you, I will start with a little snowball that turned into a big one!

Sandali and Tsotsi are getting on SO well... they are really loving life. I have noticed them watching the outside exhibit with anticipation and I suspect they are getting ready to explore out there!!!! They will unfortunately have to wait a bit longer as we would really like to introduce the Wellington boys into the exhibit space at the same time.

How much fun!

The exhibit is in its very last stages of completion and everything is being polished up ready for the opening of the chimp area to visitors this weekend!

My name is Cassandra and I am the senior keeper of primates here at the zoo. That means my job is looking after all the primates in the zoo which is a fantastic job!
